Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, Lenny Henry, Griff Rhys Jones and Dawn French, with host Clive Anderson, star in the improvisation radio show that spawned the TV phenomenon. Based on comedy suggestions from the studio audience, this is ad-libbed comedy at its best.
Regulars Stephen Fry and John Sessions are joined by Lenny Henry, Dawn French, Hugh Laurie, Enn Reitel, Griff Rhys Jones, Kate Robbins, Rory Bremner and Jon Glover as they battle their way through a succession of games and romp through a world of literary styles, TV theme tunes, and film genres. Chairman Clive Anderson desperately tries to hold the whole thing together and the guests make it up as they go along in this riot of improvisation, which is often funnier than many scripted shows.

THE DOWNSIDE: It seems disc-based releases of "Whose Line is it Anyway?" are destined to always be a bit odd. The 20-episode first season of the US season was released in two volumes of two-disc each (followed by a "Best of" release with episodes from various seasons later on). The first UK televised series was sort of the opposite: the first two entire seasons on four discs all at once. I suppose it makes sense that the US DVDs were split to I guess test the waters of the market, and the latter maybe done as it was just so that Ryan Stiles and Greg Proops could be on the cover (since they don't arrive until the second season). But here we have a perplexing release decision. Before the CW reboot, before the US version, before the televised UK version, there was the radio version of Whose Line is it Anyway? Of which there was only one series, which consisted of six episodes. This CD release is a set of two discs, on which are... FOUR of those episodes. Why not make it a three CD set with six, ALL of the episodes of the entire run? It's not as if those remaining two are lost to the ages - all six are available as downloads on iTunes - and as far as I can figure there isn't anything particularly wrong with the other two episodes. I will admit that four episodes available as legitimately burnt audio CDs is better than no episodes available as legitimately burnt audio CDs, but it is the mildly annoying tease that this CD set is just that smidgen away from being complete that loses this product its fifth star.(If you're wondering why the two absent episodes matter if they're easily available as downloads, well, it can be nice to have a physical thing as a collector's item, can't it?)on THE UPSIDE though, there is something that I really do appreciate about this collection. Whereas most audio CDs of half-hour radio programs (I'm thinking of the American ones, anyway) separate the episodes by one track each - for example, the first CD track is the entirety of the first episode, and the second track is the entirety of the second episode - this one does the listener the favor of giving each segment its own track! So the first track would be the introductions, the second Authors, the third Wrong Theme Tune or Rap or Genre Options or whatnot and so on. So it is nice to know that this wasn't just hastily thrown together, and it does help to make up for missing out on The Fish Rap and Stephen Fry's breakfast cereal advertisement.Oh, and the audio quality's really quite good too.
